According to UN estimates, the number of active landmines around the world exceeds 100 million. A sad legacy that maims or even kills about 2000 people every month.
Demining this legacy is done by hand in nearly all cases due to the lack of alternative techniques and methods. Unfortunately, demining by hand is time consuming, costly and involves significant risks for the mine clearers and their surroundings.
The project "International Demining - L.A.S.E.R." has set itself the goal of developing an effective and - above all - safer method to detect landmines and other explosive devices and render them harmless.
At various stages of demining - such as the detection or neutralization of the mine - the cooperative partners deliver contributions of innovative technology to improve, secure and facilitate the overall process.
The detection of mines and other explosive devices is performed using a biological indicator, which after spreading of a suspected area shows a specific response to explosives.
The obtained data serves as the basis for the subsequent neutralization using a laser beam. This is defusing from a distance of 100 meters and above. The advantage of using a laser beam is that the explosive is neutralized by burning it, preventing a dangerous and uncontrollable explosion.
Benefits of L.A.S.E.R.
- L.A.S.E.R. is able to quickly and reliably detect explosive devices in suspected areas.
- In case of a finding, L.A.S.E.R. can disarm explosives from a safe distance.
